A temporary pause in fighting between Ukraine and Russia took effect at 3 a.m. Tuesday to allow humanitarian aid into the town of Oleshky. The localized ceasefire, brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump, is designed to deliver essential supplies to up to 2,000 residents currently stranded in the Russian-occupied area. According to the United Nations, these civilians have limited access to food and medicine due to drone attacks and explosive mines.
The decision to halt combat in this specific sector followed meetings between Trump and civilian negotiators from both countries. She also received briefings from U.N. officials regarding the conditions in Oleshky. This local truce is scheduled to last through Saturday, though both militaries confirmed the start of the pause in separate statements. Negotiators noted that deep mistrust has previously prevented similar attempts at stopping the fighting.
This humanitarian mission is a precursor to a new round of U.S.-brokered talks expected next month. Those negotiations aim to end the war, which has continued for more than 4.5 years since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Oleshky is located in the Kherson region, approximately 540 miles southeast of Kyiv. Russian forces captured the town on the first day of the invasion. In June 2023, the town suffered additional damage when floodwaters inundated the area after a dam collapse.
Despite the local pause in the south, missile strikes continued in other parts of Ukraine. Minutes after the 3 a.m. ceasefire began in Oleshky, ballistic missiles struck Kyiv. City officials reported that a late Monday attack on a university campus in the capital killed one person and injured 10. In Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, late Monday attacks killed two people and injured four.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to the continued attacks on the capital in an online post. He stated that the world needs to see that Russia desires to kill and continue waging war. The aid mission to Oleshky will include doctors, medicines, food, and water. Once these supplies are delivered, evacuation corridors are planned to open for the residents.
The town sits across the Dnipro River from the city of Kherson. Russian forces initially seized Kherson during the early stages of the 2022 invasion but retreated across the river several months later. The Dnipro River currently separates Russian and Ukrainian forces in the region.
